Motives for Caregiving for Elderly Parents
Marie Přidalová
Abstract:
The study presents a sectorial/partial analysis of the qualitative study “Caregiving families”, which explores the experiences of adult children caregiving for their elderly parents. Based on the data from 29 in-depth interviews, the author introduces adult children’s motives for providing a daily care to their dependent parents. Five categories are presented – practical factors, factors connected to the parent-child relationship, socialization factors, factors connected to the parent figure and external conditions factors. The possible impact of social policy arrangements on motivation of family members to become a caregiver for elderly relatives is discussed.
