Mothering Private and Public – A Case of the Institution of SOS Children Village

Abstract:
This paper results a qualitative inquiry of a SOS children village. By means of depth interviews the author tries to render the specific role of resident foster-mothers. Short theoretical introduction touches the gender determinism in context of split of social space to the private and public sphere, further the phenomenon of modern individualism. Analytical part brings the main categories from interviews in the light of concepts of private and public. The conclusion is, that the role of a foster-mother evokes the institution of a maternity leave, and is a private, challenging and an undervalued one. Solution is a recognition of an essential importance to the child care and the domestic work, as well as the engagement of men, what will result in a more equivalent society regarding gender roles.Keywords:
