Theological-Philosophical Education as a Way to Link Theory and Practice in Social Work
Ondřej Fischer, Petr Jandejsek
Abstract:
The article contributes to ongoing discussions about the need of interconnecting Theory and Practice in Social Work. By claiming that carefully tailored theological and philosophical University Degree Courses and Lifelong Learning Programmes can significantly contribute to this end, the authors enter the debate on the appropriate meaning and the form of theological education at socially and pastorally orientated study programmes. Their argument rests on the assumption, that the notion of Critical Reflective Practice (CRP), has gradually become a challenge to implement the combination of theoretical and practical attitudes to professional Social Work. It is shown that some of the requirements of the CRP strategies, e.g. the need for understanding one’s own values, or re-description of one’s own personal ideal, can be successfully passed on to students and practitioners in their LLL or Degree Programme Courses through Theology and Philosophy studies. The benefit of this strategy becomes apparent when the concepts of Theology and Philosophy are appropriated to the needs of CRP and made meaningful also within nonreligiously orientated environment. Keywords:
