Reflections on the Gender Silence or Is Gender a Relevant Category in Social Work?

Radka Janebová

Abstract:
Living in gendered societies makes it necessary to take into account the specific ways in which social problems and social issues affect the lives of women and men. Social problems are very often gender biased and this would be substantive hypothesis for the professions dealing with these problems, and for the training programmes for professions like social work. Social work education and everyday practice are insensitive to gender inequalities yet. The development of gender theory and research highlights the significance of gender category to understand to social phenomena and to support gender-equality ways of thinking and policies. In this article I examine the potential for making the change toward a gender-integrated curriculum and practice of social work.
