School Social Work in the United States: A Historical Perspective

Abstract:
School social work has evolved gradually in the United States as American education has changed since the colonial era. Current problems in U.S. public schools include poverty, racial segregation, school violence, and mental health issues. Future trends in U.S. school social work consist of the emergence of evidence-based practice and a focus on early intervention as exemplified in response-to-intervention practice.
