Janus-Faced Social Work: Three Views on Control in Social Work
Radka Janebová, Zuzana Truhlářová
Abstract:
Social work, on the one hand, is expected to contribute to social altruism and to advocate social justice and human rights. On the other hand, it should work for the welfare of society as a whole and control people for thier own protection and others. Social workers repeatedly encounter situations, where they face a dilemma between help and control. While the question of help has been thoroughly analysed by multiple publications in a Czech context, the same does not apply for control. The aim of the article is to reflect the concept of the control function of social work within three sociological paradigms (consensual paradigm, theory of conflict, postmodernist theories) from the perspective of critical social work. Throughout, we can see positives for social work coming from all three currents. Keywords:
