“Assistance” and “Control” in Social Work Counselling Practice from the Perspective of a Solution-Focused Approach
Leoš Zatloukal, Lenka Tkadlčíková
Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: The article focuses on the concepts of “assistance” and “control” in the context of counselling from the perspective of a solution-focused approach. The goal is to describe some theoretical models that can be useful for reflecting on “assistance” and “control” and at the same time are compatible with solution-focused tenets. Theoretical base: The text is theoretically based on solution-focused approaches and broader systemic/postmodern traditions. METHODS: There are models offering different perspectives coming from solution-focused approaches and related theories. All of them are critically reviewed and “assimilated” into the solution-focused approach. The possibilities of practical work with them are illustrated on a sample case. SOCIAL WORK IMPLICATIONS: Refection on “assistance” and “control” can help in deepening reflection on a “working alliance” with clients in the counselling practice of social workers. The models offer some guidelines for developing a “working alliance” or solving potential raptures in it.Keywords:
