Counselling in the Difficult Life Situations of Scout Troop Members

Jana Růžičková, Monika Punová

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: This empirical essay is aimed at finding answers to the elementary research question: “What attitudes do scout-masters and members of scout troops adopt towards counselling their members in difficult life situations?” THEORETICAL BASE: The theoretical conceptualization defines counselling, scouting and scout-master, member of the scout troop, life situation and attitude. METHODS: A qualitative strategy was chosen to answer the research question. Partial research questions focus on the cognitive, emotional and behavioural component of attitudes. The tool for collecting data included semi-structured interviews with eight respondents – officials and members of the Scout Movement. Data was processed based on open coding. OUTCOMES: In the context of interactions between scout-masters and members of scout troops, there is an overlap of purely interest-based activity with something that can be characterized as counselling, not professional but laic. SOCIAL WORK IMPLICATIONS: Conclusions can be potentially used in social work with children and youth. In the context of interventions in the life situations of children and adolescents – in enhancing their well-being, it would be useful for the roles of social workers and scoutmasters to become more complementary, and aware of the differences in their functions.
