Diagnosis vs. Assessment in Social Work

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: The paper seeks to open a discussion on diagnosis and/or assessment and to point out the reservations and benefits of individual approaches to this analytical phase of the process of working with the individual and the family in social work. THEORETICAL BASE: An objectivist approach to diagnostics, constructivism in judgment, as well as an eco-social and systemic approach are used to grasping the subject of assessing the client’s life situation in the individual and social risk within the family. METHODS: Content and comparative analysis of the relevant literature is used, as well as its confrontation with the results of the research carried out and that of professional experience. OUTCOMES: There is unique significance of both analytical processes in social work and the presentation of the family social risk assessment concept. SOCIAL WORK IMPLICATIONS: These are mainly in the area of the social protection of children, where the concept of social risk assessment of the family has the potential to work with the family risk assessment for the future by both workers and the family itself.
