Use of Reposed Data Sets from Representative Sociological Surveys in Doing and Teaching Social Research

Abstract:
The article informs about the use of data sets and questionnaires from large representative sociological surveys funded from public resources and saved in the data repository of the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The contract on public availability is conditioned by a non-commercial use of data sets and questionnaires in academic social research and education. Research agenda is often closely associated with that of social work or health care. Students can train basic statistical exercises or learn how to develop properly the research tool in quantitative surveys. Further, comparative research linking original empirical data from students surveys to findings on larger representative populations provide with a deeper insight. The paper describes a good practice in use of existing data sets and gives examples of inappropriately used data.
